Isla Isabel Notes

Anchoring

Successfully anchored in the south anchorage. Found good sand holding in the middle of the bay just inside the entrance. We entered the center of the bay and proceeded north until the depth reached 20 feet, then dropped the anchor and backed down on it so that the anchor was resting in 20 feet but the boat was in 35 feet with 120 feet of chain.

We set a trip line and buoy on the anchor in case the chain got fouled.

Only occasional sound of scraping of the chain on rocks on the bottom. Have anchored in much worse conditions.

Bay was well protected from the NW and E winds. No swell.

Easy dinghy landing. Beach is moderately steep. Would have been good to set a stern anchor for the dinghy and tie bow to shore on long painter to keep the dinghy off the few rocks.

Anchor marker shows at 21º50.569’N 105º52.952

We considered anchoring on the east side per Atalya’s recommendation, but getting close enough to get some swell protection was uncomfortably close to the rocky shore in 12 feet depth.

West trail to the top of Cerro del Faro was easy to find. Great view from the top.

East trails around Lago Crater are behind the fish camp buildings. Look for the staircase in the woods behind the buildings. Trails are marked with blue, orange or yellow ribbons ties to trees. There’s a junction shortly after the stairs over the hill behind the fish camp. The blue trail goes to the right for spectacular views from above the cliffs. Trail continues quite a ways further than indicated on Shawn and Heather’s map. The orange trail goes to the left past Lago Crater and to the north side of the island.
